Spring Planting

After several years of study... I will now try to grow the garden I've always wished for in the many years of trying and failing miserably. Learning the tricks of growing vegetables is an education and I'm still learning.

3/15/09 I have just started the seeds. This year I will start with more than I need. My planed planting list is...

  1. Rutgers Tomato

  2. Super Boy Tomato

  3. Beefsteak Tomato

  4. Brandywine Tomato

  5. Better Bush Tomato

  6. Sweet 100 Cherry Tomato

  7. Bell peppers

  8. Straight neck Squash

  9. Iceberg Lettuce

  10. Carrots

  11. Radishes

  12. Sweet Yellow Onion

  13. Romaine Lettuce

3/26/09 Most every seed I've tried has come up! I will definitely have more than I need and will most likely give some away to my friends at work.

3/27/09 Started the tomato seeds for the outdoor hydroponics unit. My choice this year will be the Brandywine for it's great taste. I'm using regular 6oz plastic drink cups with cypress mulch and a small layer of peat on top for the seed to start. I used cypress mulch as my growing medium last year and it worked well.

4/1/09 The Hydro Brandywine seeds are up and under
florescent lights along with the other seedlings now. Today I will make a small hydro unit for the seedlings. I decided to make a flood and drain system to start the seeds in. It took all of about fifteen min. to set up. I've put the hydro seedlings outside with this system since the weather is so nice.

4/6/09
Spoke too soon! The temperature is going to be getting down in the lower 40's. A record low for this area this time of year! I will have to move my hydro unit into the house tonight. I'm glad I waited to plant my other veggies out in the pots.

4/7/09 Temps are going down below freezing tonight. WOW!

4/15/09 Well after all that rain and cold I have started planting the pots!

4/17/09 I have just about finished planting the larger pots with my choice of tomatoes. And will start with the smaller ones next if the weather is good.
I still need to set up the support beams on each end of the rows to support the tomato plants. Even the determent bush tomato plant on the end with all the tomatoes on it and supported with stakes is starting to lean over too far.

4/20/09 Today I picked two
tomatoes off the Better Bush and pulled some radishes. The heavy rains made some of the radish split.

4/23/09 The drip irrigation lines are finished. This should help with the many trips to the water faucet. And I think a very good investment.

5/2/09
The tomato plants I planted are now about 2 feet high! The Beefsteaks stem being about an inch thick half way up the plant! This translates to good sized tomatoes I'm sure.

5/10/09
So far so good. I have squash! Two 2 inch long and should be ready for the table next week.

5/13/09 Some of the tomato plants are showing signs of leaf spot fungus and I have treated them with fungicide. The Big Boy Tomato are starting to produce some
tomatoes

5/14/09
Well only one squash made it. Slugs got the other. Had to put out slug bait.
